Square Enix scraps triangle strategy on Switch eShop, could see wider release

Key Takeaways

  • Triangle Strategy has been removed from the Nintendo eShop, although Square Enix says it’s a temporary move.
  • The tactical RPG will return one day. However, if this is the case, the publisher can switch to Square Enix and not Nintendo.
  • A similar situation occurred with both Octopath Traveler titles, with the end result being a multiplatform release for the two games.

Triangle Strategy, Square Enix’s tactical role-playing game that was released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, could potentially make its way to non-Nintendo platforms relatively soon. That’s because Square Enix revealed early Sunday that it would temporarily digitally remove the title from the Nintendo eShop, with the game set to return at an unannounced date.

A cursory look at Triangle Strategy’s Nintendo page shows that it is indeed not available to purchase digitally, although physical editions, along with those who have already purchased it digitally, remain unaffected.

A delisting followed by a new offering is fairly unprecedented in this age of gaming. However, another Square Enix title also suffered a similar situation, which is why there are rumors of a bigger re-release.

Octopath Traveler eventually went multiplatform

As some gamers may recall, both Octopath Traveler and its sequel, Octopath Traveler II, eventually found their way beyond Nintendo’s handheld. The original Octopath Traveler was released in 2018, before making its way to PlayStation consoles earlier this year.

Similar to Triangle Strategy, Octopath Traveler was removed from the eShop before eventually returning. When the game returned, the publisher was no longer listed as Nintendo, with Square assuming publishing rights.

It’s impossible to say whether Triangle Strategy will suffer the same fate, although recent history suggests it’s a fairly safe bet. As for when a potential multiplatform release or announcement could happen, that’s anyone’s guess, but with the Game Awards on the horizon, things could pick up again relatively quickly.
