Erik ten Hag has been linked with a return to management after leaving Manchester United in October.

Erik ten Hag has been linked with a quick return to management following his sacking from Manchester United.

Ten Hag was signed in October with United in 14th place and suffered their worst ever start to a Premier League season after nine games. Defeat against West Ham proved to be the last straw for the Dutchman, with Ruud van Nistelrooy taking over as interim boss before Ruben Amorim was announced as permanent replacement.

The 54-year-old won both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup with United, finishing with a 55% winning percentage.

But while he has been enjoying a break from management and has been watching football in his native country, the former Ajax boss could make his return to the dugout sooner than expected.

According to Patrick Berger of Sky Germany, Ten Hag is a potential candidate to replace Marco Rose at RB Leipzig. Rose is under pressure at Red Bull after six games without a win, with the team currently in fourth place in the Bundesliga and 34th in the Champions League without a single win in five games.

They were beaten 5-1 by VFL Wolfsburg this weekend and have not tasted victory since October 29, when they defeated St Pauli in the second round of the DFB Pokal.

A round of 16 tie against Eintracht Frankfurt could be decisive for Rose’s future and they have already looked at possible replacements.

Roger Schmidt is a top target having previously worked for sister club Red Bull Salzburg and was in charge of Bayer Leverkusen for three years between 2014 and 2017.

He was sacked by Benfica in August and is therefore out of work, but it is claimed that the 57-year-old does not want to take a job in mid-season and would prefer to wait until the summer.

It could open the door for Ten Hag to return to management. He has experience of coaching in Germany, having spent a spell in charge of Bayern Munich’s second team when Pep Guardiola was at the helm.
